Young Archie Prize!
The beginning of this term has seen students working hard to master the art of Portraiture. From using line to express different emotions, learning to draw correct facial proportions to rendering portraits in watercolor or acrylic paint; all our students have been diligently progressing towards being selected to enter the Young Archie Portraiture Prize. The national competition is through the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
All finalists will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW or on the online gallery.
Fingers crossed to all the Academy’s entries, and we will keep you updated with any news!
This year’s Chinese New Year celebrations saw the Academy’s incredibly talented assistant Jess complete a fantastic feat: being part of the Malaysian Book of Records for achieving the ‘largest hand-painted Pig Lanterns’ shown at the Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple, Jenjarom, Selangor.
The three pig-themed lanterns, with peony and plum blossoms as decorations, reflect traditional Chinese culture and the arrival of spring.
Sculpture by the Sea
It’s that time of year again!
Cottesloe Beach is once again brimming with a mind-blowing 71 sculptures from artists across 17 different countries.
In connection to this local event, the Academy is working in 3D, making continuous line wire sculptures inspired by Alexander Calder. We highly encourage everyone to see the exhibition and keep an eye out for Hu Quanchun’s sculpture ‘Draw Houses Make Houses’ as the artist asked students to draw the houses to preserve the memory of a site in Hunan, China. Our students will be able to relate to using metal to ‘draw in space.’
Each year as part of Youth Week WA KickstART Festival, there is a Sketchbook Project exhibition at the State Library of West Australia in Perth’s Cultural Centre.
This year selected students from the Academy have been invited to complete their sketchbooks by March 19th, showcasing their unique style and stories.
Check out WA KickstART festival online to book in for some fantastic workshops.
The sketchbooks will be on show from April 13 – 20 and then part of a regional Travelling Sketchbook Exhibition.
